For years, Auto Shot Tracking has been logging every drive, approach, and chip of your round automatically from your Apple Watch the moment you tee off. The one thing it couldn’t capture was what happened once you got to the green.
Golfshot’s new Auto Putt Tracking (APT) feature captures every putt on the green automatically, then rolls them into your score and your putt distances. Together with Auto Shot Tracking, you finally have a complete record of your round, from start to finish. It’s available now for Golfshot Pro members on iOS!
How Auto Putt Tracking Works
When you walk onto the green, your Apple Watch knows. It switches into Green Mode automatically, surfaces a single button to drop the pin at its exact location, and starts watching for your putting stroke.
The moment your putter makes contact with the ball, your watch detects the putt itself, reading the motion of the stroke. Not a pause in your GPS trail, not a guess based on where you stopped walking. Every putt is counted as you go, and by the time you finish the hole, your score and your putt distances are already filled in. One quick tap to confirm and you’re off to the next tee!
If Auto Putt Tracking ever misses a putt or counts one it shouldn’t, just tap the new Menu button on your Apple Watch to start, cancel, or modify a shot. You stay in control of your round, without breaking your rhythm.

Pro tip: Set the pin. When you’re standing at the cup, tap “Set Pin Location” once. The Auto Putt Tracking feature will count your putts either way, but the pin is what turns “you had three putts” into “you had a 22-footer, a 4-footer, and a 1-foot tap-in.” That’s the data that will make your Strokes Gained values precise. If another Golfshot user already set the pin for that hole today, your watch picks it up automatically.
Engineered To Capture Every Stroke
Most putt trackers wait until you stop moving and try to reconstruct what happened. That works until it doesn’t. A long lag-putt where you walk before the ball drops. A tap-in you barely paused for. A quick second putt after a near-miss. Those are exactly the moments where a guess-based system breaks down.
Auto Putt Tracking takes a different approach. Apple Watch Series 8 and newer come equipped with High Frequency Motion sensing, capable of capturing wrist movement 800 times per second. Auto Putt Tracking taps into that data to read the putting stroke itself, not the silence around it. We see the takeaway, the impact, and the follow-through as they happen, so every putt gets the attention it deserves.
What You’ll Need
- Apple Watch Series 8 newer, including Ultra. Auto Putt Tracking uses a high-frequency motion API that only exists on these models. If you’re on a Series 7 or older, the setting will hold for when you upgrade.
- Golfshot Pro. New members get a 7-day free trial.
- The latest version of Golfshot on both iPhone and Apple Watch.
- Auto Shot Tracking & Auto Putt Tracking enabled. Prepares watch for shot tracking.
Then: Settings → Apple Watch → Auto Shot Tracking → Auto Putt Tracking. Toggle it on, walk through the one-time onboarding, and play.
The Most Complete Round-Tracking Experience On Your Wrist

Auto Shot Tracking handles the swings, Auto Putt Tracking handles the greens. The result is a record of your round that builds itself while you play, and statistics that are actually worth reviewing. Drives, approaches, chips, and now every putt on the green, all detected automatically by your Apple Watch and rolled into a full, accurate score.
Thank you to the beta players who helped us get here. Your feedback shaped this release, and we appreciate every round you logged along the way. For specific instructions on how to use ATP, checkout the ATP User Guide.
A Complete Game, Finally Complete
Auto Putt Tracking builds directly on the foundation of Auto Shot Tracking, which revolutionized how golfers capture their rounds by using Apple Watch motion sensors to detect swings in real time. Together, the two features create a seamless experience that covers every shot from the tee box to the final putt — no phone required, no manual input needed.
For beginners, Auto Putt Tracking removes the friction of learning how to log a round, making post-round insights immediately accessible and encouraging better habits from the start.
For intermediate players, the complete tee-to-green dataset unlocks Strokes Gained analysis across every part of the game — driving, approach, short game, and putting — in a single round.
For advanced players and competitors, the depth and accuracy of fully automated tracking provides the same caliber of data previously available only through costly professional analytics tools.
The new feature is partially welcome (FINALLY, you can choose a putter on normal shots), but it’s incredibly buggy. My auto putt isn’t even turned on an my watch is an Apple 6, but it still appears to be picking up putts. I can no longer move the final position of some shots, because this putt feature is overriding it. Its like a fixed dead end of the shot tracking, and whilst I can easily delete other shots, these putt numbers seem to persist without any way of deleting them. Note mine isn’t even turned on in the app! Some holes are actually pretty accurate, which if you get it right would be hugely useful; but the stand-out thing on your app is not necessarily how accurate it is, but how easy it is to correct the shot tracking when it goes wrong. This new feature, currently, goes against that. It needs a fix.
This is a great feature. What I wish is that I could go back and review my putting stats in more detail. For example, what distance was my average 1st putt (shows how good my approach shots were) what distance was my average 2nd putt (shows how close I got my 1st putt to the pin) etc
For example if my average 1st putt was 16.2 feet, and my average 2nd putt was only 1.2ft, and my score was 75 with 60 % GIR that would show my short game is compared to a round where I shot an 85
Hi Dacre,
We appreciate your feedback and details on this situation! We want to apologize if there was any disruption to your experience with our new Auto Putt Tracking feature.
With Auto Putt Tracking turned off, the Tracked Shots flyover will still display the putts you have entered manually. This means manually entered Putts for scoring and Putt Distances will now show on the aerial Tracked Shots section of your round, along with your other tracked shots. Both manually and automatic tracked shots are shown on this view.
To edit or delete Putts from this view please press the green Flag on the right hand side of the screen. Then press the arrow at the bottom of the screen to expand your putt drawer. From here you can adjust the putt length or press the red X to remove the putt.
You also have the option of adjusting the Putt location on the aerial flyover. Click on the blue Putt box > then drag this to the desired location on the green.
We hear you and we are taking this seriously and are investigating this thoroughly within our teams. Our development team is actively working on this!
Feel free to send us an email at support@golfshot.com and we would be happy to help walk you through this!
Tracked shots is so messed up now. It picks up my drives, but approach shots are logged as putts (of 384 feet!) Now I have to go back in and remember what club I used on approach for almost every hole and add that shot and move the putts to the green. And since my watch is not a series 8, how does the app assign feet to the putts if I leave those blank (ie I do not track my putting feet currently).
A few comments. I can’t seem to turn off Golfshot automatically moving on to the next hole whenever I am passing a tee box by quite some distance. This is very annoying and will be worse with auto- putt tracking.
Does auto- putt tracking cost more? I don’t know where I am with Golfshot Pro as I bought the pro but it only lets me use Golfshot so I don’t know if I’m in Pro or not!
Agrees, I’ve always measured the lengths of my putts for years, but never seen my statistics.
Really miss that info.
For the new version, that we need to go up to the hole to tap the iWatch, that’s not always beneficial, time consuming….
I am trying to use the putting feature on my practice function
All the other clubs work fine but not the putter. I have selected a putter in the golf equipment function
Any suggestions
Thanks
I feel that the app has struggled with shot tracking. Every round it misses most of my drives so I’ve decided to not renew my subscription. I’ve been a user for a few years and I feel that the app is getting worse.
Agree. I want it gone
Please make putts editable in ‘Tracked Shots’.
I have two holes where the app thinks my approach shots are putts & I can’t edit them to show the correct club.
Also, I have putts tracked switched off, yet it still tracks them.
Can I go back to the previous version please, I don’t need putt tracking!!!
Thank you
Hi Ian,
Although Auto Putt Tracking is turned off, your Tracked Shots will still display the putts you have entered manually along with your other tracked shots.
To edit or delete putts from the tracked shot editor you’ll need to access Green Mode by tapping the green flag icon on the right hand side of the screen. Then press the arrow at the bottom of the screen to expand your putt drawer. From here you can adjust the putt length or press the red X to remove the putt.
Our development team is actively looking at ways to improve Auto Shot and Putt Tracking. If you would like to send us a note to support@golfshot.com we would happy to assist you further!
When will right handed people who shot left (aka Canadians who play hockey this way, there are a lot of us) be supported? Watch is on the trail wrist.
Thanks
When is android coming for putt tracking
Will this be available on Android watches?
I am right handed but I wear my watch on my right wrist. As such it states it can’t track my shots. Is there a way around this, or is this on the backlog of updates? I’ve cancelled my membership because of this not being available.
Can’t wait to try this. Now can you auto detect when I’m at the next tee box and forgot to enter my score. Update to the hole I’m playing or give an audible warning to finish scoring the previous hole?
Great feature, but Golfshot automaticcaly changes to the tee of the next hole manytimes before I can put. Is there a solution?
I love the golfshot app and have used it for years.
I appreciate that you continue to improve the app and can forgive the occasional bugginess as you develop new features. many of the comments above are spot on and the difficulty or inability to edit some shots is one of the most annoying problems.
When a putt not a putt ie you are off the green but using your putter is difficult to categorize in golf shot.
I have not figured out how to cancel the putt but not the shot and further assign the club.
I am left handed, play right handed and with persistence have learned to wear my watch on my lead (left ) hand. It’s annoying but not as stressful as trying to get your score right and keep up with the foursome without a simple editing feature. That the app jumps to the next hole and won’t go back is equally annoying. My last gripe is the inaccuracy of some of the distances the app generates for putts like 8 foot putts recorded as 30 footers. I love the information generated by the app and have always like the presentation provided but the strokes gained data still needs work in that regard. I am new to strokes gained and interpreting the information is still a little murky. Keep up the continuous improvement Golfshot is still the best golf app out there.
I get issues where it picks up shots from other holes. Impossible to delete them.
Is it possible to set the pin location, after i putt the ball?
I think technically that should be possible or am i missing something?
It would be a great upgrade because on large greens it is a bit of a hassle to walk all the way to the flag set the pin and then walk back to your ball…on the other hand the ball always lands in the cup and then the location could be set!?
Hi Lennart! You certainly should be able to set the pin after hitting your putt. You are correct that it can be easier to set the pin as you are picking up your ball from the cup. If you are having issues with setting the pin afterwards, feel free to contact us at support@golfshot.com and we can take a look into this for you!
Cool, I will test it for my next round. I was unsure if it will track my putts as well because in all the instructions it is stated to set the pin first and then continue putting.
Additional question:
Is it possible to see my strokes gained against my hcp class instead of a pro?
